We aim to provide opportunities for children to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as resilience and respect. We aim to teach the skills and theory that enable pupils to co-operate effectively as part of a team and work strategically in order to achieve a goal- skills that can be transferred into other aspects of academic life. As well as learning through the curriculum, the children at St Alban’s have access to a wide range of inclusive high-quality extra-curricular activities after school, including athletics, netball, and football.

We aim to provide opportunities for children to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. We aim to teach pupils the skills and theory that enable pupils to co-operate effectively as part of a team and work strategically to achieve a goal-skills that can be transferred into other aspects of academic life. Children learn to make decisions on behalf of the team and look at the big picture.

Implementation

Each child receives 2 hours of curriculum time PE weekly which is carefully planned and mapped out to ensure a broad and full

range of skills and activities. These sessions are either delivered by class teachers during PE lessons

Children in Years 3 and 4 attend swimming lessons, where they are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of

25m using a range of strokes. In addition to PE in curriculum time, we also strive to provide opportunities for children to access extracurricular

physical activity through a wide range of sporting and active clubs. at both KS1 and KS2 but is embedded further throughout the school day, utilising the children’s language development and allowing for further opportunities to develop language skills across the whole curriculum.

Our curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

Have fun and experience success in sport

• Have the opportunity to participate in P.E at their own level of development

• Secure and build on a range of skills

• Develop good sporting attitudes

• Understand basic rules

• Experience positive competition

• Learn in a safe environment

To achieve this, the intent is to provide teachers with the knowledge and resources to enable them to teach P.E. with confidence. We have introduced our new scheme of work, ‘Complete P.E’-an online planning and assessment resource that provides teachers with lesson plans

and resources to support the delivery of high-quality P.E. The scheme outlines clear success criteria set against age-related expectations and ensures all learning outcomes are achievable, which provides a simple and accurate system for teachers to monitor progress and attainment.

The scheme ensures complete inclusion by suggesting games and equipment that can be adapted to meet the needs of children with SEND.

Impact

All children receive a broad and balanced PE curriculum. Every child will access all the key areas of the subject. Teachers plan PE with a clear progression of skills and knowledge. This ensures that all children access it at an age-appropriate level.
