Come and See
RE Years 3-6
R.E is the core subject of the curriculum at St Alban’s Catholic Primary School. In order to fulfil the above aims and to address the 4 areas of study outlined in the Curriculum Directory for catholic schools – Revelation, Church, Celebration and Life in Christ – the Diocesan recommended programme, Come and See, is taught in Year 3 to Year 6.
One of the goals of the scheme is to enhance children's understanding of Scripture, with each year group and topic focusing on specific Scripture passages. This approach builds progressively over time, ensuring that by the time they leave, children have a solid foundation in both the Old and New Testaments.
Each topic follows the Explore, Reveal, Respond process. In the Explore phase, children discuss relatable issues from their own experiences. During Reveal, they are introduced to new knowledge within the unit. In Respond, they reflect on this knowledge, considering its significance for their lives and actions as Christians. Each unit concludes with a celebration, deepening their appreciation of God's love for them. This follows the pattern of: the human search for meaning, God’s initiative in Revelation and the response in faith. This pattern is outlined both in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and in the Curriculum Directory.
At the beginning of each topic, the children are asked the Big Question. By giving the learning in Religious Education direction through the use of key questions, mysteries or puzzles to answer or solve, the curriculum appears much more compelling, imaginative and challenging.
A key question should also be relevant to the children’s interests and concerns. Topics such as ‘Rules’ which explores The Sacrament of Reconciliation may not capture the attention and interest of a student in the same way as a question such as ‘How do rules bring freedom?’
These questions are then asked again at the end of the topic, to allow children to reflect on what they have learnt.
The scheme has been cross referenced with the Religious Education Curriculum Directory 2018.
